Kaoru NEMOTO, Director of the United Nations Information Center(UNIC), detailed the preparations for the “Future Summit” to be held in September at UN Headquarters in New York. (23/5/2024)

I congratulate the Japanese Parliamentary Committee of the World Federation on its 75th Anniversary. The United Nations Information Center (UNIC) is a branch office of the United Nations Secretariat in Japan. The United Nations University, which Dr. INOUGUCH mentioned, is the only UN organization headquartered in Japan. However, there are 30 offices of UN agencies and organizations in Tokyo and major cities in Japan. This reflects that Japan is a very important member of the United Nations. Discussions on the “Summit of Future” and the “Pact for the Future” are now reaching their final finalization stage. Originally, in 2020, on the 75th anniversary of the UN, a resolution was passed by consensus of all member states at the UN General Assembly, asking the UN Secretary-General to make recommendations for UN reform and multilateralism reform. The following year, 2021, the UN Secretary-General did his homework and compiled a proposal called Our Common Agenda as his answer. The Pact for the Future has two annexes.

One is the Global Digital Compact. This was finalized at the Hiroshima Summit last year. The Hiroshima AI Summit is a very important asset and is reflected in this document. The other is the Declaration on Future Generation, which will be annexed to the main text of the Pact for the Future. In the Pact for the Future draft, the words “Human Security,” which Japan has attached great importance to as a foreign policy, are included in the “Peace and Security” section. The Summit of the Future, which will be held on September 22 and 23 as the first meeting of the high-level week of the September Plenary Meeting, is also included in the current draft. On September 20, there will be Action Days, a two-day event that will bring together member governments and various non-state actors, such as youth, NGOs, and businesses, to deepen the discussion. The Summit of the Future is a crossroads for the United Nations, a breakdown or a breakthrough, and I am very encouraged that we are having this dialogue with the Diet and the Japanese government members. We at the United Nations hope to provide you with more input again in various ways.(Reporter: Koki IMON)
