As the ACUNS Annual Meeting is being held at the United Nations University, it is a great honor for the Kyoto University of the Arts, where I serve on the Board of Directors, to have the opportunity to organize the session. I would also like to extend my warmest welcome to you all in Kyoto after the Annual Meeting, and express our sincere gratitude for your participation in this important event.

We recognize that the challenges of AI and climate change are two major risk factors for humanity. In addition, with the security environment changing dramatically and the dynamics of the United Nations undergoing significant transformation, the question of whether or not the UN is functioning adequately is on the table for discussion.

The ACUNS aims to build on past experience with your valuable input to propose concrete measures for the UN’s functions in the next generation, and to establish a framework for countries to support these measures. However, under the current P5 situation, it is extremely difficult to make concrete progress. Therefore, we intend to develop concrete and constructive discussions with your active participation on how to mobilize and utilize knowledge to confront the two pressing issues of AI and climate change and to disseminate the results of these discussions to the world.
